Cayenne 958 & Touareg 7P Overland Build Guide (2011–2018): What Actually Fits

Most overland Cayenne and Touareg builds you see are first-generation cars. This guide covers the second generation, the Cayenne 958 and Touareg 7P (2011–2018): what fits, what doesn't, the right build order, and what a realistic build costs delivered.

Cayenne 958 & Touareg 7P Overland Build Guide (2011–2018): What Actually Fits - Overlandtrek

Searching for an overland build guide for a Porsche Cayenne or VW Touareg yields many guides. Almost every guide you find is for a first-generation car. Examples include the 955, 957, or Touareg 7L. The second generation gets far less attention. This includes the Cayenne 958 and Touareg 7P (2011–2018). These cars are now more affordable. They are also more comfortable on long road stages. Plus, they still have a strong platform underneath.

Owners ask us one question most often. What can I actually fit to a 958 or 7P? This guide answers that using our fitment data. We manufacture every part here. All production happens in our own factory. So, we can be clear about what does not fit.

First: confirm you have a 958 or 7P

Vehicle Chassis code Model years
Porsche Cayenne, second generation (incl. 958.2 facelift) 958 2011–2018
VW Touareg, second generation (incl. facelift) 7P 2011–2018

Model years can sometimes overlap between markets. If you are not sure, email your VIN to info@overlandtrek.com. We will confirm the chassis code for you. We will also confirm what fits before you spend anything. For first-generation cars, see our full Cayenne, Touareg and Q7 fitment chart.

What's different about building a 958 or 7P

Be realistic about what the second generation is. It is a very capable all-road and light-trail vehicle, but it is not a first-generation car with newer seats. Three differences shape the build:

  • Low range. The first-generation Cayenne had a two-speed transfer case; most 958s do not. Some 7P Touaregs were ordered with VW's Terrain Tech package, which added low range and locking differentials, in certain markets. If you are still shopping for a car to build, a Terrain Tech 7P is worth seeking out. Check the build sheet of any car you are looking at.
  • Suspension spec varies. Some cars left the factory on air suspension, others on steel springs. This matters for the lift kit (see step 3).
  • Bumpers are body-specific. Nothing from the 955 or 957 bumper range fits a 958, and there is no adapter. The platform's underbody hardpoints, however, carried over well, which is why skid plates and rock sliders cross generations.

This points to a sensible build philosophy. Protect the underside of your vehicle first. Lift it moderately with proper geometry correction. Carry your gear on the roof. Drive within the car's capabilities.

What we don't make for these cars (yet)

We would rather tell you now. That is better than you finding out after ordering across an ocean. We do not currently make a front bumper for the Cayenne 958. We also do not make a rear bumper for the Cayenne 958. The Touareg 7P has no rear bumper from us. A rear differential plate for the 7P is not available. Fuel tank skid plates for either car are also not made. The Cayenne 958's rear differential plate is available. It is part of the complete aluminum skid plate kit. If your build needs one of these, email us. We manufacture parts in-house. New parts are a tooling decision for us. Repeated requests move items up our list.

The overland build guide and order we recommend

1. Underbody protection

A gravel road or rutted track finds the underside first. This applies to a 958 or 7P. The factory plastic undertray cannot take a hit. Start with the engine and transfer case skid plate. It covers the most expensive, lowest parts.

Cayenne 958 owners: the complete aluminum skid plate kit offers better value. It adds a rear differential plate. This protects the engine and transfer case. Every plate is cut and drilled for the 958. Choose the package with rock sliders and side skid plates. Steps 1 and 2 are covered then in a single order.

Steel or aluminum? Manganese steel is cheaper, shrugs off repeated hits, and can be hammered straight in the field. 7075 aluminum is lighter, which matters on a heavy SUV that will also carry a roof load. If you drive mostly gravel and forest tracks, aluminum is a good fit. If you expect rock and repeated contact, steel is the safer choice.

2. Rock sliders

Sills are expensive to repair on these cars. They are the next part to touch. This happens on a crossed-up track or rutted exit. The rocker mounting points did not change. This applies between generations. So, the proven slider design fits from 2002 through 2018. Use the Cayenne sliders for the 958. Get the Touareg sliders for the 7P.

3. A 2-inch lift, with geometry correction included

Lift comes third, not first. Protection keeps the car running well. Lift allows it to clear more obstacles. Our 958 / 7P lift kit adds two inches. It uses mono-tube shocks and forged 7075 aluminum spacers. This ships as a complete set. The 1-inch subframe drop kit is included. Tubular upper control arms are also in the box. Adjustable sway bar end links come with it. Adjustable level sensor links are all in the box too.

That matters more than the lift itself. Spacers alone push the CV joints. They also push control arms past working angles. Air suspension height sensors then read the wrong height. This causes clunks and warning lights. Early CV wear also results from this. The correction parts deal with each issue. If you want engineering details, read our guide. Our lift geometry guide explains principles. It covers the first-generation platform.

Here are two things to know before ordering. The kit is for cars with factory air suspension. It stays fully in place and working. If your car has steel springs, send us your VIN first. A full wheel alignment is required after fitting. Installation is an intermediate level task. It takes about 4–6 hours to complete. No cutting or welding is needed.

4. Tires

A good all-terrain tire helps off pavement. It does more for a 958 or 7P than any other part. Increase tire size carefully. These cars have limited wheel-arch room. What clears at ride height can rub. This can happen at full lock or full compression. Check both before committing to a size. Remember that a much larger tire changes gearing. It also affects braking and speedometer accuracy. If unsure about your lifted car, ask us. Ask us before you buy new tires.

5. Roof rack

Overlanding requires carrying many things. The roof provides available space. Our aluminum alloy roof rack fits both vehicles. It fits the 958 and the 7P. It mounts to the factory roof rail points. Your car must have factory rails fitted. It is rated to 200 kg static. This is the load it holds when parked. This number matters for a roof-top tent with people. While driving, your vehicle's dynamic roof limit applies. That limit is much lower than static. Check your owner's manual for details. Always work to the smaller number.

6. Front bumper and winch (Touareg 7P)

For the 7P, our steel front bumper offers benefits. It adds a winch mount. Recovery points are also included. It provides a better approach angle. The bumper includes a 6 mm manganese steel winch plate. It is rated for winches up to 12,000 lb. It keeps the factory parking sensor cutouts. Radar cutouts are also maintained. It bolts to factory mounting points. No cutting or drilling is needed. Plan for the added weight. The bumper is 38 kg itself. A 12,000 lb winch adds another 35–40 kg. This weight is on the nose of the car. Consider your front suspension setup carefully. This is important if you add both parts.

For the Cayenne 958, there is no bumper from us yet. A recovery plan based on rated recovery points and a recovery kit is the sensible alternative for now.

What a realistic build costs

Why buy from the manufacturer

Most parts for these cars come from resellers. Every part in this guide is made by us. It's cut, formed, welded, and e-coated. This occurs in our factory in Changzhou, China. Every catalog item is held in stock. It ships direct to your door. Delivery takes 4–8 weeks worldwide. Our fitment data comes from our own jigs. It's not from a reseller's catalog. That's why we can state what does not fit. Order processing and after-sales support are handled by our US-based team.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Cayenne 955 or 957 bumper fit my 958? No, bumpers are body-specific. The 958 has a different body design. For the 958, we make skid plates. This includes a complete aluminum kit. It comes with rear differential protection. We also make rock sliders and lift kits. The roof rack is also available for the 958.

Will the lift kit turn off my air suspension?
No. The lift is added above the factory system, and the air suspension stays fully in place. The included adjustable level sensor links keep the height sensors reading correctly at the new ride height.

My car has steel springs, not air suspension. Can I still lift it?
Send your VIN to info@overlandtrek.com before ordering and we will confirm what applies to your car.

Is a Touareg 7P or a Cayenne 958 the better overland base? Both build well for overlanding. If low range is important, a 7P is stronger. This applies to the 7P with the Terrain Tech package. The 7P also has a winch bumper available now. The 958 does not have one yet. However, it gets a complete underbody kit. This kit includes a rear differential plate.

Do skid plates and rock sliders fit both the pre-facelift and facelift cars? Yes, they do. The engine, transfer case, and slider mounting points are shared. This applies across all years from 2011–2018. The same parts also fit the first generation models.

How long does delivery take?
4–8 weeks door to door, worldwide, from our factory, and many orders arrive sooner. Tracking is emailed when your order ships.
