Frequently Asked Questions
What does this plate cover?
Both the engine — oil pan and gearbox — and the transfer case, in a single plate with no exposed gap between them.
Aluminum or manganese steel — which should I choose?
The 5 mm aluminum plate is lighter and well suited to overlanding, fire roads, and moderate off-road use. The 3 mm manganese steel version work-hardens on impact and is the better choice for serious rock crawling and repeated heavy strikes.
Why is the aluminum plate thicker than the steel one?
Aluminum is less dense than steel, so a thicker section is used to reach comparable protection while still coming in lighter overall.
Do I need to remove this for oil changes?
Yes. The plate must come off to reach the sump for oil changes and other underside maintenance.
Can I buy all the skid plates together?
Yes — the complete aluminum skid plate kit bundles the plates at a lower combined price.

Fitment is solid and the aluminum looks and feels quality. A little steep compared to steel options but the weight savings probably worth it.
Rock crawled my Touareg last weekend and this thing held up no problem. Shipping was slower than expected but the part itself is solid.
Aluminum is thick and the finish looks good. The hardware included was a little light on washers but I had some in the shop already.
Had to slightly elongate one mounting hole to line everything up, maybe 10 minutes with a file. Once done it fit perfect.
Mounts up clean and covers the transfer case well. Only gripe is the instructions are basically just a diagram, took some guessing.
