Porsche Cayenne & VW Touareg Petrol Low-Temperature Thermostats — 60°C Transmission & 70°C Engine

A thermostat decides when your cooling system actually starts working. Most thermostats on the market only begin to open at around 80°C. Our transmission thermostat opens at 60°C and our engine thermostats open at 70°C, so transmission fluid and coolant are sent to the oil cooler and radiator much sooner, the whole system runs cooler, and you keep more thermal headroom for towing, sand, slow technical trails and hot climates.

⚠️ Vehicle compatibility — VW Touareg: petrol models only
These thermostats are designed for the same vehicles as our Radiator & Transmission Oil Cooler Kit: the Porsche Cayenne 955 / 957 and the petrol VW Touareg Gen 1 / Gen 1.5 (2002–2010). They are not compatible with any diesel (TDI) Touareg, which uses a different, turbocharged cooling system. If you are unsure which engine your vehicle has, email your VIN to info@overlandtrek.com before ordering.
🔧 Fitting our Radiator & Transmission Oil Cooler Kit? You need two thermostats:
1. Transmission Thermostat 60°C — required with the kit. It controls ATF flow through the transmission oil cooler (the small cooler in the kit). One part fits every vehicle the kit covers.
2. Engine Thermostat 70°C — matched to your engine. It controls coolant flow through the radiator (the large cooler in the kit). Choose the version for your engine from the table below.
Add each thermostat to your cart separately. Thermostats are not included in the cooling kit.

How a Thermostat Works

Inside every thermostat is a sealed capsule filled with a temperature-sensitive wax. While the fluid is cold, a spring holds the valve shut and the fluid circulates in a short loop, bypassing the radiator or oil cooler so the engine or gearbox warms up quickly. As the fluid reaches the thermostat's rated temperature, the wax melts and expands, pushing a pin that opens the valve against the spring. Fluid is then routed through the radiator (engine) or the transmission oil cooler (gearbox), where heat is released. As temperature falls, the wax contracts and the spring closes the valve again — the thermostat constantly regulates flow to hold a stable operating temperature.

The opening temperature is the key number. A typical 80°C thermostat keeps the radiator or cooler bypassed until the fluid is already at 80°C. Our engine thermostats start opening about 10°C earlier at 70°C, and our transmission thermostat about 20°C earlier at 60°C — so cooling begins sooner and the whole system settles at a lower working temperature.

Key Benefits

  • Cooling starts much earlier. Engine thermostats open at 70°C and the transmission thermostat at 60°C, against the usual 80°C, so heat is moved out before it builds up
  • Lower, more stable operating temperature. More margin before the temperature gauge climbs under tow, in sand or on long low-speed climbs
  • Protects the transmission. Heat is what ages ATF and wears automatic gearboxes. At 60°C the transmission thermostat sends fluid to the oil cooler early, so ATF spends far less time running hot
  • Unlocks your cooling upgrade. Lets the larger radiator and transmission oil cooler in our kit start working sooner instead of waiting behind an 80°C valve
  • Less heat soak in hot climates. Lower baseline temperature means plastics, hoses and seals in the engine bay see less sustained heat
  • Direct factory replacement. Fits in place of the original thermostat — no cutting, drilling or modification

Uses

  • Completing the Overlandtrek Radiator & Transmission Oil Cooler Kit upgrade
  • Overlanding, towing and carrying heavy loads
  • Deep sand, desert driving and slow technical off-road trails
  • Hot-climate daily driving and long highway climbs
  • Replacing an aged or failing factory thermostat

Installation

  • Difficulty: Intermediate — cooling system work
  • Process: Drain the coolant (engine versions) or follow the ATF procedure (transmission version), remove the thermostat housing, swap the thermostat and seal, refit and refill
  • Best time to fit: At the same time as the radiator and oil cooler kit — the system is already drained, so you only bleed and refill once
  • After fitting: Bleed the cooling system properly — this platform is sensitive to trapped air. Use VW/Porsche G12/G13 specification coolant and check the ATF level at operating temperature

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these thermostats fit a diesel Touareg?

No. All of our thermostats — like our Radiator & Transmission Oil Cooler Kit — are for petrol Touareg Gen 1 and Gen 1.5 models only. The diesel (TDI) Touareg is turbocharged and uses a different cooling system, so neither the thermostats nor the kit are compatible with it.

Which thermostats do I need with the radiator kit?

Two. The Transmission Thermostat 60°C is required with the kit — it controls ATF flow through the transmission oil cooler, and one part fits every vehicle the kit covers. Then add the 70°C engine thermostat for your engine, which works with the radiator: Cayenne 4.8 V8; Cayenne & Touareg 3.6 V6; or Touareg 3.2 V6 & 4.2 V8. Add each one to your cart separately.

Why is the transmission thermostat required?

The transmission oil cooler in our kit only works when the thermostat lets ATF flow through it. The transmission thermostat controls that flow, so it is an essential part of fitting the oil cooler correctly. Ours opens at 60°C, so the larger cooler begins cooling the gearbox early instead of sitting bypassed until the fluid is already hot.

Is a thermostat included with the radiator and oil cooler kit?

No. The Radiator & Transmission Oil Cooler Kit contains the radiator, the transmission oil cooler and mounting hardware only. Thermostats are sold separately on this page.

My Touareg has the 3.6 V6 — which engine thermostat?

The Cayenne & Touareg 3.6 V6 version. The Touareg 3.6 and the Cayenne 3.6 share the same thermostat. The Touareg 3.2 V6 and 4.2 V8 use a different one — choose Touareg 3.2 V6 & 4.2 V8.

Why 60°C and 70°C instead of 80°C?

Most thermostats on the market only start opening at around 80°C, which keeps the radiator or oil cooler bypassed until the fluid is already hot. Our engine thermostats start the coolant flow at 70°C and our transmission thermostat starts the ATF flow at 60°C, giving a lower working temperature and more reserve for heavy load, high ambient temperatures and slow off-road driving.

Will my engine take longer to warm up?

Slightly, in cold weather, because the thermostats begin opening earlier. In normal and hot climates the difference is small, and the engine still reaches a stable operating temperature. If you drive mostly in very cold conditions, email us before ordering and we will advise.

Do I need to modify anything to fit them?

No. Each thermostat is a direct replacement for the factory part and fits the original housing and mounting points.

What warranty do I get?

Like every Overlandtrek product, the thermostats carry a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects — repaired or replaced at no charge.
