Made in China: Who Actually Builds Your Off-Road Parts (and Why It Matters) - Overlandtrek

Every Overlandtrek part is made in our own off-road parts manufacturing factory in Changzhou, Jiangsu. If that gave you pause, that's reasonable. "Made in China" covers everything from world-class work to cheap knockoffs. From the outside, it is hard to tell them apart.

This article explains who builds our parts and how we build them. Learn what to check before spending money on vehicle armour.

The concern is fair

Most people who hesitate have been burned before, or know someone who has. A bumper whose mounting holes don't line up. A coating that rusts through after one winter. A seller who disappears once the money clears.

Those problems are real. But they don't come from a country. They come from three things. No one owns the specification. No one checks fitment. No one is accountable after the sale.

Country of origin vs. who controls the line

Many off-road parts are made in Chinese factories. Some brands never mention it. The label tells you very little. The real question is: who controls the production line?

A reseller buys finished goods, adds a margin and ships them on. When a part doesn't fit, they raise a complaint with their supplier and wait. A manufacturer owns the drawings, the jigs and the welding, and can fix a problem at the source.

We are the manufacturer. Overland Dream Factory opened in Changzhou in 2021. We built protection for China's domestic market. We served Cayenne and Touareg owners who drive hard. In 2025, we began shipping internationally as Overlandtrek. Every bumper follows the same specification, regardless of destination.

Inside our off-road parts manufacturing factory

Every part is cut, formed, welded and coated on our own machines, to our own drawings:

  • Laser cutting on our own fiber laser, so every mounting hole lands where the drawing says it should.
  • CNC press brake forming for consistent bends from one unit to the next.
  • Hand welding on fixed jigs, so a production batch shares the same geometry.
  • Full e-coating, inside and out. Not just a powder coat over bare steel: the coating reaches inside the tube, where corrosion actually starts.

The specifications we publish, and build to

  • High-carbon manganese steel as our default for bumpers, skid plates, rock sliders and roof racks, chosen for impact resistance.
  • 7075 aluminum alloy where weight matters: the Lexus GX550 front bumpers, our aluminum rock sliders and our 5 mm aluminum skid plates.
  • 50 mm tube, 3 mm wall, 5 mm plate.
  • A 6 mm manganese steel winch plate rated to 12,000 lb on every front bumper, at no extra cost (winch not included).
  • Rear bumpers rated to 200 kg static, with 50 kg per swing arm. Roof racks rated to 200 kg static.
  • Bolt-on to factory mounting points. No cutting, drilling or welding, and fully reversible if you return the vehicle to stock.

We publish these numbers so you can hold us to them. A seller who can't tell you the wall thickness of the tube they're selling probably doesn't know it.

Built for one vehicle, not "universal"

We make around 50 products. Each is engineered for a specific vehicle and year. These include the Porsche Cayenne 955, 957 and 958. We support the VW Touareg Gen 1 and Gen 2. We also support the Lexus GX550 and the INEOS Grenadier. We never use universal parts with spacer kits.

Our fitment chart lists what fits each generation, and what doesn't. If you're unsure, email us your VIN or model year and we'll confirm the right part before you order.

What happens if something goes wrong

Accountability after the sale is where many overseas sellers fall short, so here is exactly what you get from us:

  • Limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, we repair or replace it at no charge.
  • US-based order and after-sales support. We aim to answer every message within one business day.
  • 14-day returns on unused, uninstalled items. EU and UK customers also keep their full statutory rights.
  • Transit damage reported within 48 hours of delivery is resolved with a repair or replacement.
  • If your order is delayed, we email you the reason and a new estimate. If it hasn't shipped yet, you can cancel for a full refund.

Full terms are on our Shipping, Warranty & Returns page.

The honest trade-off: delivery time

Buying factory-direct costs one thing: time. We have no US or European warehouse. Delivery takes 4 to 8 weeks door to door. All orders include tracking. There is no distributor margin between you and the steel.

We pay customs duties on most orders. The checkout price is the final price. Some countries require the customer to be the importer. We contact you before shipping if this applies. You will never face a surprise at the door.

A checklist for buying off-road parts from any seller

Whether you buy from us or someone else, these questions separate serious manufacturers from risky sellers:

  1. Who actually manufactures it? A clear answer is a good sign. A vague one is not.
  2. What are the specifications? Material, tube wall, plate thickness, load ratings.
  3. Can you show real production photos? Not renders or stock images.
  4. Who handles a warranty claim, and what exactly is covered?
  5. Who pays duties and import taxes? Find out before you pay, not at the door.
  6. Will they confirm fitment for your exact vehicle before you buy?

We'd encourage you to put every one of those questions to us.

Frequently asked questions

Are Chinese-made off-road bumpers good quality?

It depends on who controls the manufacturing, not the country. Look for a seller who builds in-house, publishes specifications, shows real production and stands behind a written warranty.

Why are your prices lower than some Western brands?

Because we sell factory-direct. There is no importer, distributor or warehouse margin added between our production line and your door.

Is Overlandtrek a reseller?

No. Every part is designed and made in our Changzhou factory. We have built off-road protection since 2021.

Will I have to pay import duties?

For most orders, no. We handle customs duties and import taxes. In the few countries where local law makes you the importer of record, we tell you before your order ships.
